Statement of Purpose: To promote literary distinction in
historical writing by awarding the annual Francis Parkman Prize
for the best book in American history (book copyright in the previous
year); in odd-numbered years the biennial James Fenimore Cooper
Prize for the best historical novel (book copyright in the previous
two years); the annual Allan Nevins Prize for the best-written
dissertation; and the annual Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Award for Distinguished Writing in American History of enduring Public Significance. The
submission due date for the Cooper, Parkman, and Nevins prizes
is 31 January.
