The AHA offers many options for membership to best fit your situation. Our membership is offered in one- or three-year terms, expiring from the date you enroll. So no matter when during the year you join, you'll get a full 12 months of benefits. You can help the environment—and reduce your dues—when you choose electronic versions of our publications.

Information about Member Categories
Contributing: The highest level of yearly membership that allows individuals to enhance their commitment to the Association. Contributing members receive special recognition on our website.
Life Member: With a single contribution of $3,500, members can gain lifetime status. Becoming a life member at any stage of your career shows commitment to the discipline. Lifetime members are invited to the executive director’s reception at the annual meeting and are recognized in both the annual meeting program and the awards ceremony booklet. They also receive special recognition on our website.
Student: Available for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Proof of current status may be requested.
Early Career: Available three years after graduation (either undergraduate or graduate).
Emeritus/Retired: For retired historians
K-12 Teacher: Receive a special joint membership with the Society for History Education, which includes a subscription to The History Teacher.
Associate: This rate is available for persons whose primary identification is in fields other than history.

Options for E-Publications
You may request to stop receiving print copies of the AHR and receive a $12 discount per year when you join or renew by marking the check box on the rate page. To decline print copies of Perspectives and the annual meeting program, check the appropriate box on the rate page (no discount applies). A $20 postage fee is added for members with international addresses, including Canada and Mexico, unless you decline all print publications.
Member Services Program
Receive the AHA’s series of booklets and/or current editions of the Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians by joining the MSP.
MSP Category 1: Receive all new AHA pamphlets (including professional publications and essays in AHA’s several essay series) produced during the coming year of your membership.
MSP Category 2: Receive the current edition of the AHA’s Directory, if you sign up between October 1 and April 1, or the next edition as soon as it comes off press.
MSP Category 3: Receive everything in the previous two categories.
For individuals who have consistently maintained membership for 50 years, the AHA waives all future membership dues.

Bulk Membership Purchases
Institutional members can now purchase codes for $30 each to distribute to their students, faculty, or staff to subsidize their memberships. For students who choose the electronic-AHR option, the discounted membership will be FREE.
