Where Historians Work: An Interactive Database of History PhD Outcomes, 2014–17

Where Historians Work, a project of the American Historical Association (AHA), is an interactive database charting the career outcomes of individuals who earned history PhDs in the United States from 2004 to 2017. This dashboard includes the occupational data collected for the 3,787 history PhDs who graduated between 2014 and 2017. For the 2004 to 2013 dataset, please visit Where Historians Work, 2004–13. We recommend reading the introductory and methodological information before exploring either dashboard.

Most visualizations included in Where Historians Work are interactive. Toolbars near the top of the slides allow users to add filters to view outcomes of historians from different departments, eras or regions of specialization, and gender. Hovering over the slides will activate toolbars containing additional statistical information. Where Historians Work is best viewed in a desktop browser in full screen.

Where Historians Work was made possible by the generous support of the Mellon Foundation and is part of the AHA’s Career Diversity for Historians initiative.
