Call for Proposals | S-USIH Conference Leadership

We invite scholars of American thought to propose topics and organizing themes for our annual meetings of the Society for U.S. Intellectual History, to be held in 2024 and 2025.

Our mission is to support and share scholarship focused on American history, thought, and culture. We advance the historical study of American thought among academic and non-academic scholars. We provide a forum for its exploration, aiming also to broaden and diversify the communities engaged in this study and the approaches applied to it.

A key part of that mission is our annual conference, held in October–November, in either onsite or virtual formats. Proposals should reflect diversity in every aspect of content, composition, scholarly interests, and accessibility. Good conferences call for collaboration, and conference co-chairs are strongly encouraged. Applicants should consider questions of meeting space, accessibility, travel, and amenities in proposing a meeting place, whether onsite or virtual. As we go about our work fulfilling the S-USIH mission, we also uphold the American Historical Association’s professional standards for the discipline, due to our status as an affiliated society.

Once a proposal is chosen by the S-USIH Executive Committee and elected by the membership, the conference chair(s) will constitute a Program Committee. This group of scholars determines all content for the sessions, plans the logistical details, and assists with additional fundraising activities for the conference. Conference chairs serve as  voting members of the Executive Committee during their term of service. For a sense of USIH meeting protocols, you can review past conference info here, here, and here.

Proposals for the 2024 and 2025 conferences are due by Thursday, 1 December 2022. To apply, please send the following materials in ONE .PDF or Word .DOC to susihistory@gmail.com:

Brief abstract, 500 words maximum, describing the proposed conference topic, venue and dates, and whether it will be an onsite or virtual format

-Brief summary, 500 words maximum, outlining the methodological or historiographical issues that the conference will address

-Sample budget, with any potential or confirmed sources of financial support

-2-Page C.V. for conference chair applicant, with confirmation of your active S-USIH membership. If a team of scholars is proposing a conference, then please combine all the C.V.’s in one document

Thank you for joining the conversation at USIH and keeping our mission moving forward.
