ACLS invites proposals from US colleges and universities for support of two-year postdoctoral fellowships within fields of the humanities for members of groups that have been historically underrepresented on their campuses with the ultimate goal of transforming these positions into tenure-track hires.

This RFP represents an evolution of ACLS’s Postdoctoral Partnership Initiative (PPI), which aims to learn more about the impact of postdocs on individuals in the humanities and the value of such postdocs to institutions. The initiative, which is made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, brings together higher education institutions working on these issues for an ongoing conversation about the evolution of the humanities professoriate.

ACLS looks to partner with institutions that are committed to increasing the diversity of their faculty and that will use postdoctoral fellowships as a means to funding individuals, hired through departmental processes, with that end in mind. With the partnership, ACLS will cover the cost of one high-quality two-year postdoctoral fellowship with competitive annual stipend and benefits to be hosted within a department at the institution. We expect institutions to provide forms of support including office space, limited teaching responsibilities, mentoring, and integration into the local scholarly community.

We know that circumstances vary across institutions and so might the position title, level of support included, and approaches for transforming temporary positions into permanent faculty roles. ACLS is open to working flexibly with institutions that can demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling the aims of this partnership.
