We are writing to invite you to join us in celebrating VE Day with a Transcribe-a-Thon focused on uncensored, handwritten reflections of military service from WWII soldiers collected by the Army Research Branch. "The American Soldier" project is a collaboration between multiple units at Virginia Tech (College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences; University Libraries; and Center for Human-Computer Interaction) as well as the National Archives and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

We hope you will consider organizing a group at your school or in your community. The event will be based in Athenaeum, a space for the Digital Humanities at Virginia Tech, but we have made it possible for classes, groups, communities, or individuals to participate both online and remotely.

Anyone wishing to transcribe these documents may do so via our dedicated Zooniverse site [https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/tkotwim/the-american-soldier]. We will live stream portions of our VE Day Transcribe-a-Thon, including: introductory remarks about the content from project lead and VT History faculty member Ed Gitre; dramatic readings of soldier responses by VT Theater students; and performances of musical selections from the WWII era. We also welcome any additional performative ideas from participating locations!
