The African Humanities Program (AHP) awarded 13 PhD candidates and 35 early-career scholars from Sub-Saharan Africa over $800,000 in fellowships in the ninth competition of the program.

The 2017 cohort, who will spend one year of research and writing supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, joins the AHP family of more than 300 fellows from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.  AHP Fellows are eligible for residencies for research and writing at one of the seven institutes for advanced study in sub-Saharan Africa. Fellows in residence have access to the host universities’ research resources and its libraries, and have the opportunity to meet students and faculty in their field.  
 
“Residencies are one of the ways in which AHP has encouraged international exchange of ideas on the continent,” noted Andrzej W. Tymowski, director of ACLS International Programs. “Fellows take residencies at institutes outside their home countries to engage with new scholarly communities.” 
 
The projects supported this year investigate novels, digital communities, archives, magazines, newspapers, music, and maps, among other topics, to unpack concepts such as diaspora, sexuality, consumerism, identity, language, and education.  This research will enrich our knowledge about the African continent.
