Saturday, June 11, Noon–1:30 pm

Washington area author Ann Satterthwaite discusses her new book which presents a comprehensive study of rural American opera houses, focusing on history, theater, opera, entertainment, immigrants, architecture, and planning, as well as the actors, patrons, impresarios, and audiences that sustained them. These small town opera houses, mostly ventures of local patrons, feature distinctly American aspirations of cultural entrepreneurism and civic optimism. The author assesses different roles of these multi-purpose halls in providing communal, creative energy in the nineteenth century and today. A book-signing follows the talk. Book price: $31.45 Member | $34.95 Non-member.
