Join us at Saint Louis University May 20-21, 2016 for a symposium that presents exciting new research on the African American experience in the nineteenth-century West.

The symposium African Americans in the Nineteenth-Century West examines the African American experience in the Midwest and West. Among the program highlights are a keynote address by Dr. Quintard Taylor, Jr. of the University of Washington, a pioneer of African American western history, and an address by Lynne Jackson, a local activist and a direct descendant of Dred Scott. Historians at the symposium will present engaging new findings about Midwestern and western African American history. Please see website for full information about panelists and sponsors. In addition to the addresses and academic panels, local teachers will engage in all aspects of the symposium, including a teacher workshop to be held on Monday, May 23. This inclusiveness will strengthen mutually beneficial connections between Saint Louis University and the wider community, as well as engage with vital current discussions surrounding race, activism, and power.
