15th Annual New Sweden History Conference

“Power and Politics in New Sweden, 1638-1655,” the Fifteenth Annual New Sweden History Conference, will be on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at Lazaretto Ballroom in Essington, Pennsylvania (Essington is a Philadelphia suburb).

 

The conference will focus on the difficulties of governing a 17th-century North American colony using New Sweden’s four governors as examples. Speakers:  Mark L. Thompson, University of Groningen, “The Governors and the Governed: Negotiating Authority in Seventeenth-Century America”; Tytti Halonen, Independent Scholar, Helsinki, “Peter Holländer Ridder”; Kim-Eric Williams, Swedish Colonial Society, “Johan Printz: Tyrant or Tactician?”; Hans Norman, Uppsala University, emeritus, “The Life of Governor Johan Risingh: Success, Misfortunes, and Rehabilitation”; Jean R. Soderlund, Lehigh University, emerita, “Swedes and Finns in Lenape Country, 1638-1664.”

 

Cost: $45 per person ($35 for teachers and students); $40 and $30 for those who register by October 16. Registration deadline: October 30.
