Join Us at the Annual Meeting
Connect with Your Community
Since 1884, the American Historical Association annual meeting has been the premier gathering for historians to come together to share research and professional development, to learn about the discipline, and to network with other scholars from across the world. At the nation’s largest gathering of historians, we hone our professional skills and connect with historians working across numerous fields and professions. Whatever your career stage or path, there is a place for you at our annual meeting.

"I love every facet of history, therefore, I enjoyed every aspect/topic of our annual meetings immensely, especially learning, collaborating, and networking with fellow historians."
Damayanthie Eluwawalage
"The annual meeting always provided a chance to meet someone new to me and to develop professional relationships. And who does not enjoy wandering through the book exhibits?"
Barbara L. Tischler
"The annual meeting is vital for connecting to historians at all levels and ages. I taught in a public high school, GED program, community college, liberal arts college, and state university. Historians at these institutions, and more at museums and historical societies, need to gather to share expertise and moral support. I appreciate the space to raise questions and disagree in ways that enrich the field."
Aimee Loiselle
"Over the course of the past 25+ years, I met many terrific scholars at the AHA annual meeting, and I either participated in, or went to listen to, panels that truly opened my mind about particular historical issues."
Enrico Dal Lago
"I always love the chance to catch up with good friends and colleagues in the field of history and to learn from talented scholars’ papers."
Carmen Kordick Coury
"The weekend provided an indispensable opportunity for me to think deeply about the work of history teaching. At its close, I was profoundly moved by how this weekend of telling stories about our shared work and passion had reconnected me with my professional self."
Megan Porter
"Between access to publishers and public engagement, the annual meeting maximizes networking between scholars and with organizations for community and research support."
Claire Mayo
"Each January, after one semester in the classroom trying to convince teenagers that what we do in class matters, I find nothing quite as invigorating, inspiring, and reaffirming as swapping battle stories with other history teachers. I typically leave the annual meeting ready for semester two: with new materials, new ideas, new energy, and the email addresses of people whose advice I will continue to seek years later."
Katharina Matro
"The AHA annual meeting makes it easy for me to attend panels on topics that intersect with my interests or that can teach me something completely new."
Rosina Lozano
"The annual conferences are like booster shots for me, an infusion of passion for the critical inquiry of the past."
Jonathan Holloway

Planning the Annual Meeting
The AHA annual meeting is the world’s largest annual gathering of historians. Its logistics—with thousands of attendees and dozens of simultaneous sessions—takes years of careful planning. “It takes a lot of work on the back end to make a meeting seamless,” said Debbie Ann Doyle, director of meetings. “We work hard to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and productive conference.” Read more in Perspectives on History.
