The Society for Military History and the CSIS Project on History and Strategy are pleased to announce the annual Graduate Student Prize in Applied Military History. The prize recognizes outstanding essays that use rigorous academic historical study to understand issues relevant to current policymakers.
 
The prize will be awarded to the author of the best essay of 7,500 to 10,000 words that uses military history to inform current international security problems. Contestants are permitted to use any historical period, place, or persons to offer insights that are relevant to current international security issues. The competition is open to graduate students studying the history of war, including both doctoral candidates and Masters students. The application deadline is December 15 and the winner will be announced at the end of January.  
 
The prize will be awarded at the Society’s awards dinner during the Annual Meeting of the Society for Military History, 18-21 March 2021. The awardee will receive $1,000. In addition, the awardee will have an opportunity to deliver the essay’s findings to members of the national security policy community over online videoconferencing. The winning essay will also be considered for publication in the Journal of Military History.
 
Essays should be submitted as an email attachment to "Applied Military History Selection Committee at appliedhistory@smh-hq.orgEssays should be submitted in Word or PDF. They should be in 11 or 12 point font, double-spaced, and follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
