Call for Papers: CLGBTH-sponsored panels and papers at the 2020 AHA

Event Details

End: February 1, 2019

With #AHA19 complete, we are now soliciting submissions for next year’s meeting of the American Historical Association in New York City, January 3-6, 2020. The AHA has designated no theme for the 2020 AHA, but instead - as stated in the general AHA CFP - seeks submissions on all kinds of places, periods, people, topics, sources, methods, and theories and uses of history. Reflecting this, the CLGBTH welcomes sessions focused on any aspect of LGBTQ history. We especially encourage sessions addressing areas outside of the United States; periods before the twentieth century; histories of LGBTQ people of color; and the place of LGBTQ history in broader historical scholarship and/or public life. In addition to panels, we welcome poster sessions to be considered for CLGBTH sponsorship.

The AHA proposal deadline is February 15. To seek CLGBTH sponsorship for #AHA20, please submit your panel or poster session to us by February 1, 2019. This deadline allows us time to review and approve proposals for CLGBTH sponsorship in the main program, and to offer advice that might strengthen submissions. If a proposal is not accepted by the AHA, we can consider including it in our affiliated program, which is submitted after we know the results of the AHA program committee’s deliberations. Note that all people accepted into CLGBTH sessions are required to be or become current paid members of the CLGBTH.

We encourage those organizing panels to be attentive to diversity in the composition of your group, including by gender and gender expression, race and ethnicity, and professional status (e.g., tenured and tenure-track faculty, adjunct or independent, and graduate students). We also encourage you to review the AHA guidelines for submitting a proposal. To assure substantial time for interaction between speakers and audience, AHA panels are typically limited to a maximum of four participants in addition to a chair.

The AHA Program Committee does not accept single paper proposals. We encourage those without full panels to reach out to us before February 1 for suggestions for forming a panel. We also encourage you to use the CLGBTH listserve to solicit panel participants. Anyone can post to the listserve by emailing clgbth-list@clgbthistory.org.

In order to submit a PANEL proposal, please provide the following to us by the end of working hours February 1, 2019:

  • Session title (of no more than 20 words)
  • Session abstract (up to 500 words)
  • Paper or presentation titles (if any)
  • Abstract or description for each presentation (up to 300 words). Descriptions should be included for both roundtables and formal sessions.
  • For each participant:
    • Biographical paragraph or CV summary (up to 250 words)
    • Correct e-mail address
    • Affiliation, city, state, and country
    • Professional Twitter handle (optional); Website (optional)
  • Chair (required) and commentator (optional) for the session
  • Audiovisual needs, if any

In order to submit a POSTER proposal, please provide the following:

  •  Poster title
  •  Abstract of poster (up to 500 words)
  •  Biographical paragraph or CV summary (up to 250 words)

Note that the AHA will also require short session abstracts (up to 50 words), and short presentation/poster abstracts (up to 50 words) for the meeting app. We do not require this to consider your submission for CLGBTH sponsorship, however, you should be prepared to create these short abstracts for your final AHA submission.

Please send all proposals and communications to CLGBTH Co-Chairs Julio Capó, Jr. (capo@history.umass.edu) and Emily Hobson (ehobson@unr.edu). Given that timing is of the essence, we ask that all those submitting proposals please attend promptly to emails we or the AHA may send regarding your submission.
