American Empire and its Opponents - The Anti-Imperialism League and the Proponents of Peace

Defeating Spain in the Spanish-American War of 1898, the United States acquired the territories of the Philippines, Puerto Rico. and Guam. This territorial expansion was opposed by many people, who considered any form of imperialism to be contrary to the founding principles of America.  Prominent opponents of territorial conquest included Louis Freeland Post, a staunch defender of freedom and an Assistant Secretary of Labor, who became interested in Henry George’s ideas on free trade and a single tax on land values.
