Lauren Braun-Strumfels

Lauren Braun-StrumfelsLauren Braun-Strumfels received her MA (2004) and PhD (2010) in US history from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she was a charter member of the concentration in Work, Race, and Gender in the Urban World. She holds a BA in history with honors from the College of William and Mary. The recipient of several named fellowships that brought her to Rome, Italy; Greenville, Mississippi; and Washington, DC, Dr. Braun-Strumfels’ research and teaching focus on transnational US history, in particular 19th and 20th century migration and agricultural labor in the New South. Since joining the faculty at Raritan Valley Community College in 2010, she has taught courses in US and world history since 1500. She now serves as the adjunct coordinator for the Department of Humanities, Social Science and Education and as co-chair of the college’s Women and Gender Studies Committee. Having begun her academic career with a strong interest in assessment as a process to improve teaching and learning, Dr. Braun-Strumfels’ interest in tuning grows out of her efforts to craft a critically reflective teaching practice and to encourage collaborative and constructive conversation around the art and craft of pedagogy. Beyond the classroom, our society often treats history as minutiae rather than as a methodology to interpret and analyze. She sees our challenge as historians in the classroom to foster cultural fluency while also teaching students to recognize and appreciate complexity in our world.
