Today ends the official career of James Buchanan. The man who for four years past has disgraced the Executive office, is about to sink into that obscurity to which a generous and forgiving people will consign him. During his lease of power, he has become the object of universal execration and contempt, and has made his name a synonym for infamy. It is a source of profound gratification to his countrymen that this cup of bitterness is about to pass from them, and they will be devoutly thankful, even in the midst of the dangers which threaten the nation, that it is no longer to be cursed with the rule of James Buchanan.
