The SNCC Digital Gateway allows us to explore the youth-led Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), an organization that worked to empower black communities in the Deep South through grassroots organizing and planned action. The goal is to understand SNCC’s challenges and successes and their impact on the Civil Rights Movement broadly.

  1. Select a place
  2. Read about the people and events in your place. Read, listen, or watch all related documentary material.
  3. Write a paragraph for each of the following questions in our online discussion forum:
    • What role does your place have in forming, building, sustaining, and/or dividing SNCC?
    • What role does your place have in forming, building, sustaining, and/or dividing the Movement?

In class, breakout students into groups of 3 or 4 to discuss their place and compare their arguments. Then, ask them to answer the following questions:

  1. What role do your places have in forming, building, sustaining, and/or dividing SNCC?
  2. What role do your places have in forming, building, sustaining, and/or dividing the Movement?

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the significance of SNCC within the broader Civil Rights Movement
  • Formulate a historical argument using a variety of primary sources
  • Collaborate to formulate an argument
  • Express thoughts clearly and coherently in writing and orally
