Investigating Indentured Servitude

Visualizing Experiences of Colonial America

American Philosophical Society | Apr 1, 2021

Investigating Indentured Servitude: Visualizing Experiences of Colonial America draws from the Record of Indentures to examine migration, labor, and exploitation in North America. Based on three years’ worth of detailed data (1772-1775), this site examines different types of indentured servitude, analyzes gendered and familial indenture, highlights contemporary notices of runaway indentured servants or those for hire, and more. Essays provide additional context.
