Paul L. Ward served as executive secretary of the American Historical Association from 1965–73. He was president of Sarah Lawrence College from 1960–65. Ward also taught at Harvard University, Radcliffe College, Russell Sage College, and Colby College. He earned his PhD from Harvard University in 1940 with the dissertation, “The Mediaeval Attempt to Guarantee the Integrity of Royal Rights and Power as Illustrated in the Coronation Oaths of the 13th Century.” Ward passed away November 13, 2005.
