AHA Interim Executive Director, 1994 and Deputy Executive Director, 1986–1995

James B. Gardner joined the Association as its deputy executive director in 1986. He has held senior management positions at the National Archives, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the American Historical Association, and the American Association for State and Local History. He has served as president of the National Council on Public History, chair of the Nominating Board of the Organization of American Historians, on the AASLH Council, and on the editorial boards of The Public Historian and the AAM Press. He was educated at Rhodes College and Vanderbilt University, where he received his PhD in United States history in 1978.
