AHA member Tore Olsson (Univ. of Tennessee at Knoxville) was featured in a Chronicle of Higher Education article by Amelia Benavides-Colón about his experimental class using the popular video game Red Dead Redemption II to teach history. “The academic world could do much more to engage fans about things they’re familiar with, but then take them in totally unexpected directions after that initial hook,” Olsson said. His book, Red Dead’s History: A Video Game, an Obsession, and America’s Violent Past comes out in August 2024; he also wrote “Teaching History with Video Games” for the American Historical Review’s #AHRSyllabus project in December 2023.
