AHA members Kate Masur (Northwestern Univ.), Gregory Downs (Univ. of California, Davis), and Rachel Shelden (Penn State Univ.) recently had articles published in the Journal of American Constitutional History. Masur and Downs co-authored “Designed to Ameliorate the Condition of People of Color: The Reconstruction Republicans and the Question of Affirmative Action,” a comprehensive response to the history in the Supreme Court’s affirmative action opinion. Shelden wrote “Finding Meaning in the Congressional Globe: The Fourteenth Amendment and the Problem of Constitutional Archives,” which digests the Congressional Globe of the 39th Congress to analyze the public meaning of the 14th Amendment and explores the Congressional Globe as a source in historical research.
