AHA member and secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie G. Bunch III was interviewed by Julian Lucas for a feature article in the New Yorker. Lucas spoke with Bunch about his career path within the Smithsonian, including his time as founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture; his experience as the first Black secretary of the institution and the first historian to hold the position; his work in bringing two new museums, the National Museum of the American Latino and the American Women’s History Museum, to the National Mall. Bunch also discussed the challenges of leading the Smithsonian in a sharply partisan political era, and the Smithsonian’s ongoing efforts in ethical acquisition and the repatriation of certain artifacts and remains.
