James Grossman, AHA executive director, and Richard Immerman, chair of the AHA’s NARA Review Committee, wrote an op-ed in The Hill regarding AHA-endorsed legislation introduced by Sen. Christopher Murphy (D-CT) that would define what constitutes a presidential record, as well as bolster the oversight role of the Archivist of the United States. “Access to presidential records is essential to our basic understanding of who we are, and how our government works,” wrote Grossman and Immerman. “Transparency and accountability are core values of a thriving democracy, and the ample access to its government records … is a hallmark of its political culture.”
