The fifth VIS conference invites scholars in the social sciences, humanities, and arts to cross national, cultural, historical, and disciplinary boundaries to meet in St Louis to address the theme of “Veteran Identity, Advocacy, and Representation.”

The conference is a forum for scholars – including students and professionals working outside academia – to present research that speaks to the varieties and complexities of veterans' interactions with their larger societies. The scope is not restricted to any country, any era, any degree of peace or war – and certainly not to any one conception of “veteran.”

Hosted by Virginia Tech since 2013, the Veterans in Society Conference has grown into a biennial event rotating among partner universities, including the University of Missouri-St Louis and Arizona State, now under the auspices of the newly founded Veterans Studies Association (www.veteranology.org), which also sponsors the Journal of Veterans Studies (ISSN 2470-4768 : journal-veterans-studies.org/>
