The Council on America’s Military Past (CAMP) is pleased to announce the Herbert Hart Award for Writing Military History, honoring the late Col. Herbert Hart, USMC (Ret), one of the nation’s leading authories on western forts.

We invite undergraduate and graduate students to submit original, previously unpublished, scholarly articles on a topic at the intersection of American military history and historic preservation. The prize will be $1,000 and a one year membership in CAMP. All entrants will be offered 50% registration at CAMP’s annual conference in Tucson in April 2019.

Articles must be no more than 5,000 words, and consistent with the Chicago Manual of Style. Please include name, mailing address, telephone number, and academic affiliation. Email entries to editorjamp@yahoo.com by March 1, 2019. Entries will be acknowledged by email and judged by our Editorial Board.

Sample articles can be seen at CAMP’s website, CAMPJAMP.org. A good example is a cover story a few years ago on Custer and Little Big Horn that looked at the battlefield then and now. Other successful stories have featured historic military posts and those who inhabited them. CAMP has a broad definition of military posts, to include historic ships and airplanes.
