About the Institute
The American Historical Association is convening a fully virtual institute on the theme of Africa in World History. The institute will take place over three weeks (fifteen days) in June and July 2025 for 30 K–12 educators. Participants will enhance their content knowledge about Africa throughout history, allowing them to expand beyond the often-limited engagement with African perspectives in many world history textbooks and state standards.
Institute Details
Through this program, world history educators from a variety of environments will engage in a collaborative effort with university faculty and scholars to begin assembling a free digital source collection that will be hosted on the AHA’s website as a permanent resource for world history teachers throughout the United States. In addition, teacher-participants will develop lesson plans and assignments built around this collaborative sourcebook and focus on integrating African perspectives in a way that aligns with the needs of educators and students in busy classrooms.
Educators who teach world history—often divided into one- or two-year sequences between grades 6 and 10—as well as related courses, including but not limited to AP world history, comparative government, African American studies, world geography, and world cultures should apply.
