The American Historical Association is proud to partner with the Library of Congress in serving the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Mid-Atlantic/US Territories Region. The TPS grant program furthers the Library’s mission to engage, inspire, and inform audiences across the country with a universal and enduring source of knowledge and creativity.

The TPS Mid-Atlantic/US Territories Region issues subawards through two Library of Congress programs. Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) grants fund initiatives grounded in engagement with primary sources and tailored to the unique needs of learners in specific communities. The Lewis-Houghton Civics and Democracy Initiative (LHI) supports civics, history, and democracy education using creative-arts based primary sources for secondary students. Programs awarded grants through TPS and LHI will be welcomed into the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium with a shared goal to increase the educational value of the Library’s collections.

How to Apply

The TPS Mid-Atlantic and US Territories Region will review proposals submitted before deadlines throughout the year. Our next submissions deadlines will be July 15, 2025, and October 15, 2025.

Applying for a grant is a two-step process:

First, complete a Notice of Intent to outlining your project, its goals, and intended audience. This will enable our regional coordinator to determine if your idea falls within the funding guidelines. If so, you will be invited to submit a proposal before the next proposal deadline.

Notice of Intent

Second, use the project proposal guide to develop a project proposal. The proposal must include a budget and a timeline. Submit the completed proposal and supporting documentation via the online form linked below. You will receive a reply regarding your project idea within a few business days.  When a grant isn’t needed or awarded, TPS regional coordinators will offer advice and assistance to organizations who would like to incorporate TPS methods and materials into their programs, but do not receive funding.
