Statement of Purpose: The Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography cultivates an interdisciplinary community dedicated to understanding maps as an expansive form encompassing history, art, science, and technology. By promoting the creative use of the Newberry Library’s cartographic collections, the Smith Center inspires and nurtures in-person research, the use of digital collections, innovative pedagogy, and education in the history of maps through wide-ranging public programming, exhibitions, fellowships, teacher training, and internships.
