Pernille Røge is associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches courses on the Age of Revolutions, early modern European empires, Atlantic history, and European intellectual history. A scholar of 18th-century France and its colonial empire, with a broader interest in early modern European expansion, she is the author of Economistes and the Reinvention of Empire: France in the Americas and Africa, C. 1750–1802 and articles on French, Danish, and British colonization, slavery, and abolition. She is co-editor of The Political Economy of Empire in the Early Modern World and Free and Unfree Labor in Atlantic and Indian Ocean Port Cities (1700–1850). Alongside her teaching and writing, Pernille convenes Pitt’s Early Modern Worlds Initiative and co-directs an interdisciplinary, public-facing project on Gun Violence and Its Histories. She has served as co-president of the Society for French Historical Studies and is on the editorial board of The Historian. As a councilor in the Research Division, she is committed to helping the AHA promote historical scholarship through its publications and institutional collaborations. She is also eager to support the AHA’s emphasis on ensuring equal access to information at a moment in which scholarly resources, from archives to instruction, increasingly are migrating to digital platforms.
