Julia Brookins is senior program analyst, teaching and learning. She is part of the team that develops initiatives to advance history in education and public life, including work with colleagues in responding to public controversies about teaching America’s past and advocating for the integrity of history instruction at all levels. She designs and implements professional development and networking programs that bring together history teachers and faculty across institutions for unique experiences that deepen their commitment to shared disciplinary goals and strengthen their commitment to their students. She directed the Tuning the History Discipline initiative (2012-2016), a faculty-driven, student-centered national project to articulate the core disciplinary learning outcomes of a history major, and she coordinated the History Gateways initiative (2019-2024) to improve student learning and equity in introductory college history courses. Since 2015, she has organized the annual Texas Conference on Introductory History Courses. She earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and a PhD in history from the University of Chicago.
