We invite submissions on early Latin America, from any region and from periods dating from conquest to the Age of Revolutions, for an AHR History Lab forum intended to illuminate how early Latin America’s past bends, rejects, or exemplifies what are considered major thematics of and approaches to the early modern era. Examples of thematics might include genocide, seigneurialism, capitalism, patriarchy and Blackness; approaches might include theories or methods derived from “entangled empires,” coloniality, agency and resistance, counter-archives, and critical fabulation. We also strongly encourage applicants to propose their own themes and approaches that inspire a reassessment of what early Latin America’s past does to purportedly universal or defining historical categories. We especially invite submissions from historians working in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Submissions should be no more than 5,000 words including notes, which should be spare. The general tenor of the piece should be more conceptual than monographic. The total number of accepted submissions will be limited to around 8. The approximate timeline
will include:

- Initial decisions on whether the article will proceed to peer review will be made in February 2027.
- Peer review reports will be delivered in May 2027.
- Final acceptance of revised manuscripts will be issued in October 2027 for a 2028 publication date.
