The Civil Rights Cold Case Review Board, a nonpartisan panel created by Congress to review and release records of unsolved or unresolved cases involving civil rights violations from 1940-80, released 600 pages of federal documents concerning four cases of Black people killed in the 1940s. The board is currently awaiting reauthorization by Congress; under current legislation the board is mandated to shut down by January 2027. Legislation that would extend the board’s tenure until 2031 is currently pending before Congress.
