AHA executive director James Grossman appeared on CNN International with anchor Paula Newton to discuss Nikki Haley’s comments on December 27 about the causes of the Civil War. Her comments demonstrated the “refusal of some Americans to recognize a very simple truth, which was [that] to take up arms for the Confederacy or to serve in the Confederate legislatures was an act of treason,” Grossman said. “And it was an act of treason to defend the supposed right of some people to buy and sell and own other human beings. We have to recognize how much that was built into the first 250 years of what became the United States. That’s a long time, that this was part of our system.”
