The American Historical Association agrees with our colleagues at the Organization of American Historians that the US Secretary of the Interior’s Order 3431 “represents a clear and troubling intrusion into the integrity of historical presentation within the National Park Service.” This policy of censorship and distortion, moreover, is part of a pattern that the AHA and OAH condemned three months ago in our “Joint Statement on Federal Censorship of American History.”
The National Park Service has a strong record of providing millions of visitors with honest and nuanced history. We respect the professionalism of the historians on the NPS staff and the historians with whom they have collaborated in the good work that they do on behalf of the American people.
