As part of South Carolina’s 2026 review of its K–12 social studies standards, AHA staff submitted extensive public comments evaluating the proposed revisions and offering recommendations to strengthen history education in the state. Drawing on the AHA’s Criteria for Standards in History/Social Studies/Social Sciences, the comments emphasized the importance of disciplinary coherence, alignment with recent scholarship, and opportunities for students to develop historical thinking skills. This work is part of the AHA’s ongoing initiative to support rigorous, historically sound state standards and ensure that the expertise of historians and history educators informs decisions about what students learn in schools.
