We--Sasha Coles (UCSB, History) and Kristyn Scorsone (Rutgers-Newark, American Studies)--are looking for co-presenters for a lightning round panel tentatively titled "Women, Gender, and the Politics of Business" for the 2020 Big Berks conference, to be held in Baltimore, Maryland, from May 21-23, 2020. The theme of the Berkshire conference is "Gendered Environments: Exploring Histories of Women, Genders, and Sexualities in Social, Political and 'Natural' Worlds." Our panel will examine how women take on entrepreneurial roles and navigate business environments that typically exclude or marginalize them. We are also interested in how business networks frame women's identities and political mobilizations. Sasha will present her dissertation research on Mormon women silk producers in the nineteenth-century American West, and Kristyn's paper will focus on Black lesbian entrepreneurs in the city of Newark, New Jersey who are engaging in public history work. We are open to all regions and time periods. If you are interested in participating, please email Sasha at apcoles@ucsb.edu by February 1!
