In early 2026, the United States arrested the president of Venezuela, imposed a blockade around Cuba, and issued threats to other Latin American nations under the authority of President Trump’s newly proclaimed “Don-roe Doctrine.” This History Behind the Headlines explored the history of US intervention in Latin America.
Moderated by Ben Vinson III (American Historical Assn.) and featuring George Reid Andrews (Univ. of Pittsburgh), Jurgen Buchenau (Univ. of North Carolina, Charlotte), Lillian Guerra (Univ. of Florida), and Alejandro Velasco (New York Univ.), this hour-long online event was free and open to the public.
