Event Description
Please join us for the 6th and final panel of the “Historians on Democracy”-series on “Liberal Democracy and Capitalism”, taking place on June 17, 2025, 11-12 a.m./17-18 o’clock CET. This time, we want to discuss the historical and current nexus between “Liberal Democracy and Capitalism” – again with a round of expert inputs and in a subsequent Q & A of about 30 minutes. Our speakers are David Abraham (Miami), Rebecca Brueckmann (Carlton), Daniel Judt (Yale), Rahel Jaeggi (Berlin) and Samuel Moyn (Yale), all of whom study the complexities of liberalism and capitalism in different ways, and with different vanishing points, and also engage with the manifold critiques thereof up to the present. Yet, for the final panel, the idea is not only to weigh in on current events from a historical perspective, but also to debate what can lie ahead for the idea of liberalism and liberal democracy, and to probe the visions and purpose of the – still far too weak but lately growing – protests against authoritarianism in the US (and elsewhere).
The series is co-hosted by the Max Weber Stiftung and the American Historical Association.
You can register here, and the event will also be livestreamed. Attached is the flyer, please feel free to spread it in your networks within and outside academia. You can watch previous panels here, and also find us on Bluesky: @democracyhistory.bsky.social and Instagram: @historiansdemocracy.
