Every week, AHA Today showcases a new grant, fellowship, or scholarship of interest to historians which has been posted to our free Calendar. We look for grants of potential interest to a wide range of scholars, but we also seek out grants for more specific fields. This week, we are featuring an opportunity for public history initiatives focused on Latin American histories.

Latinos have a long and fascinating history in the United States dating back more than 500 years. Explore the rich stories, diverse cultures and painful clashes that have so powerfully shaped Latino lives and the nation.

The program is designed for libraries, museums, community arts and cultural organizations, historical societies, public television station affiliates, state humanities councils, and others that seek to facilitate informed discussion in their communities.

Apply by May 1 at www.ala.org/latinoamericans.

Up to 200 selected sites will receive:

• Latino Americans, an award-winning, six-part documentary series created for PBS, with public performance rights
• Cash grants of $3,000 to $10,000 to support a Latino Americans: 500 Years of History program series (public film screenings, discussion groups, oral history initiatives, local history exhibitions, multi-media projects, performances and more)
• Promotional materials to support local outreach
• Access to additional programming and humanities resources developed by national project scholars, librarian advisors and outreach experts.

Eligible institutions include:

• Libraries (public, academic, and/or community college)
• Community organizations
• Youth groups
• State humanities councils
• Public television affiliate stations
• Other educational and cultural institutions

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, created by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association, is part of an NEH initiative, The Common Good: Humanities in the Public Square.
