Tips and Suggestions

We encourage Perspectives on History authors to share their articles widely with colleagues and other contacts. Here are a few tips and suggestions:

Email your institution and/or department to let them know about your publication, and encourage them to share the article on their social media platforms or in other communications. Many institutions and departments like to highlight recent work by their scholars.

Email your professional and/or personal network with a link to the article.

If you have an ORCID account, you can manually add your article to your profile as a Publication – Magazine Article.

Are you on social media? Share the article on any platforms you are comfortable with, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, BlueSky, and Mastodon.

Article Link

Make sure to include the article link. Please mention the article has been published in Perspectives on History or use our preferred hashtag, #AHAPerspectives (good for sharing on social media). On X, you can also tag the AHA’s account (@AHAhistorians).

Description

Provide a brief description (2–3 sentences) of the article, why you wrote it, and any other relevant information you’d like included.

Character Limits

X has a character limit of 280 characters, and links are shortened to 23 characters of those 280, so draft your post carefully. Other social media platforms have more generous character limits.

Hashtags

If you’re aware of relevant hashtags, include those in your post. Hashtags are especially helpful with promoting your article on X but can help users find posts on other platforms as well.

Some examples include #twitterstorians, #MedievalTwitter, #DigitalHistory, #HistSTEM, and #EverythingHasAHistory. A History Hashtag Resource List developed by Liz Covart can be found on Covart’s website.

Tagging Accounts

If your article highlights a specific institution or individual in a positive light, you may want to tag them. Double check that you’re tagging the correct person or institution, as many social media accounts have similar names or handles.

Images

When you share the article link, the image from the article should be automatically included. If you want to include a second image, make sure it’s relevant to your article and properly cited.
