Rose Miron is the senior director of Library, Archives, and CollectionsMinnesota Historical Society. She was previously vice president for research and education at the Newberry Library. She holds a BA in History and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. Her research broadly explores Indigenous history in the Great Lakes, especially as it related to public history and memory, and she is particularly invested in place-based histories. Her first book, Indigenous Archival Activism: Mohican Interventions in Public History and Memory, was published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2024. The project is based in close collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation since 2010 and highlights one tribe’s efforts to recover historical materials from settler colonial museums and archives and reclaim their right to represent their own history. Miron has been at the Newberry since 2019, previously serving as the Director of teh D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Prior to joining the Newberry, she served as the Program Manager for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. She is currently co-directing a multifaceted public humanities initiative called Indigenous Chicago. In collaboration with several scholars, Native community members, and tribal nations with historic ties to Chicago, the project includes an exhibition and digital mapping site, as well as curricular resources and new community oral histories.
