Elections and Education

Elisabeth Grant | Nov 8, 2006

Tuesday’s midterm elections have caused quite a political shift, but what does it all mean for education? Besides electing new representatives, votes were cast in a number of states for education related referenda. Perhaps the most significant of these is Proposal 06-2, passed by Michigan, which bans the use of affirmative action at public universities. For a list of all the education referenda voted on in the election see the Chronicle article “Results of State Referenda Related to Higher Education.” And for more on Michigan’s affirmative action ban see the Inside Higher Ed article concerning it. With Democrats now controlling the House will students get more aid? Inside Higher Ed addresses this particular concern in “Colleges and the New Congress.”
