In the modern vernacular, a “hot take” is an opinion likely to cause controversy, usually because it is unpopular. Deployed ironically, the phrase suggests that an opinion is simplistic, moralizing, or otherwise banal. But sometimes a take might be, quite literally, very spicy! The peri-peri or bird’s eye chili depicted here is both spicy and a microcosm of colonial history, as Trishula Patel discusses in this issue.
