Grant of the Week: American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowships

Every week, Perspectives Daily showcases a new grant, fellowship, or scholarship that has been posted to our free community calendar. This week we are featuring the American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowships.

Criteria

The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates at universities in the US to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the PhD degree. Scholarly/Professional Development Fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. Creative and Performing Arts Fellowships are available to practitioners of the arts of India. Eligible applicants include 1) US citizens; and 2) citizens of other countries who are students or faculty members at US colleges and universities (this rule does not apply to US citizens). Approximately 35 fellowships are awarded each year.

Amount

1. Senior Long-Term (includes Scholarly Development & Performing Arts)

  • Maintenance stipend per month: Rs 80,500
  • Research and travel per month: Rs 31,500
  • Dollar supplement per month: $115
  • Per dependent allowance per month: Rs 14,000

2. Senior Short-Term

  • Maintenance stipend per month: Rs 96,600
  • Research and travel per month: Rs 31,500
  • Dollar supplement per month: $138

3. NEH-Funded Fellows

  • Stipend of $4,200 in dollars per month for each month in India

4. Junior

  • Maintenance stipend per month: Rs 49,000
  • Research and travel per month: Rs 21,000
  • Dollar supplement per month: $70
  • Per dependent allowance per month: Rs 14,000

Fellows based in Bangalore, Chennai (Madras), Kolkata (Calcutta), Mumbai (Bombay), or New Delhi receive an additional 25 percent cost of living supplement for maintenance, dollar, and dependent allowances. The dollar supplement is paid in full prior to departure for India. Each fellow receives one round-trip air ticket from the city of origin to the primary research site in India. AIIS will also provide air tickets for 2 dependents accompanying a Long-Term Fellow who is eligible for dependent allowances for 2 dependents. Short-Term Fellows are not provided tickets or allowance for dependents.
