Biometrics and Belonging

Our cover story, Jose Ragas’s “Beyond Big Brother,” brings to light emerging research on the use of identity documents to assert belonging. Although ID cards originated in the sciences of surveillance in the 19th century, their proliferation led to a variety of meanings for individuals.
