Below are some highlights from the latest issue of the National Coalition for History’s Washington Update:

• Battle to Keep EPA’s Libraries Open
  The closure of a number of EPA scientific libraries this fall has Democrats up in arms and urging Stephen Johnson, EPA Administrator, to keep the libraries open. Closing the libraries could save the EPA $2 million a year, but is resulting not only in closures, but also in documents being destroyed or made inaccessible.
• John Hope Franklin and Yu Ying-Shih receive Kluge Prize
  Kluge winners John Hope Franklin and Yu Ying-Shih were honored at a ceremony on December 5th, at the Library of Congress.
• Report by the Advisory Committee for the Records of Congress
  The Advisory Committee on the Records of Congress approved the 4th report of the Committee for transmission to Congress. The report covered the preservation of documents from the 109th Congress, as well as a number of other items. The full report will be available at archives.gov sometime next year.
• Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation
  The Department of State’s Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation held a public session on December 4th, “that included reports on the status of the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, and sundry activities of the State Department History office.”
