The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites historians to apply for a program intended to bring new perspectives on historical interpretation to National Trust historic sites. Teams of scholars will assess and enhance the interpretation of four historic sites to ensure that tours, exhibits, publications, school programs, and other educational activities incorporate diverse perspectives and current scholarship. Selected scholars will attend a one-day on-site workshop and submit an article suggesting ways to enhance interpretation at the site. Participating sites and areas of interest include:
- Decatur House in Washington DC – seeking scholars in diplomatic history, military history, the social history of architecture, and the history of historic preservation
- Drayton Hall in Charleston SC – seeking scholars in architectural history, African American history, and cultural geography
- Lyndhurst in Tarrytown NY – seeking scholars in the history of families, history of leisure, domestic service, and landscape history
- Shadows-on-the Teche in New Iberia, LA – seeking scholars in African-American history, the social history of architecture, the history of landscape, and cultural geography
The project is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services; participants will be paid $3,000 and travel expenses. For details and information about how to apply, see the National Trust for Historic Preservation website.
