My compliments to the Committee on Women Historians for their frank discussion of the problems generated by "star appointments" and unadvertised employment searches. Although it can be argued that these policies benefit some women and minority candidates, ultimately they reinforce a hiring system based on personal patronage and old school ties, rather than productivity and performance.
