Job Center Preview

David Darlington | Dec 21, 2009

Job Center handoutNow that you know how the Job Center works, you may want to know which institutions are going to be there this year. The Job Center Handout (PDF), usually provided on site to job candidates, gives us a good preview of who will be conducting interviews in San Diego. In it you will find another review of how the Job Center works, plus a list of institutions arranged geographically that have registered their searches with the Job Center as of December 16, 2009. Institutions conducting pre-arranged interviews only will have the search field and institution name listed. Institutions conducting open searches and collecting c.v.’s on site will have a full position description listed, like a Perspectives on History job ad.

Two caveats about the Job Center Handout. First, many schools conducting pre-arranged interviews only have not registered with the Job Center yet, and do not register with us until the annual meeting starts. If you have a pre-arranged interview with an institution that is not listed in the Handout, “don’t panic,” as we say in the video. Chances are the institution has reserved a private interview suite and has not registered with the Job Center yet. It is not uncommon for the list of known searches to double once we get on site. Visit the Job Center Information Booth (in the Marriott Hall on the Marriott’s Lobby Level) when you get to San Diego to see if your interviewing institution has checked in yet.

Second, searches reported more recently than December 16 do not appear in the Handout. Searches may open up right before the annual meeting. Visit the bulletin board at the Job Center in San Diego for a list of searches collecting c.v.’s and conducting interviews at the last minute.

David Darlington is co-manager of the Job Center.
